Following on the success of last year’s day out, we are planning a guided hill walk in Wicklow to take place on Sunday, 14 June at 10 am. Organised by hiking specialists Escape2Nature, the walk is in aid of the children’s cancer charity Michael’s Fan Club.
Led by MBA member Simon Holmes, the walk promises a very special kind of networking with your fellow MBAs and friends, against the backdrop of some of the nicest scenery Ireland has to offer.
The hike is just under 11km and will take about 3 1/2 hours with 485 meters of ascent. We’ll walk through Ballinastoe woods with its impressive tunnel and carry on along the Wicklow Way to the JB Malone memorial stone (JB Malone was a pioneer of the Wicklow Way walking trail), where there are fantastic views down on Lough Tay. From there we will walk onto White Hill, which has nice views of Vartry Reservoir and on to the sea and Sugar Loaf mountain, as well as westwards.
We’ll continue until the trail leaves the Wicklow Way and proceed up Djouce, passing the site of a plane crash in 1946, when a French army Junkers plane crashed with 5 crew and 21 girl guides on board. Stormy weather caused the plane off course and it landed like a glider on the boggy ground and although there was some damage, the fuselage was intact. Despite some injuries everyone survived.
From here we’ll continue to Djouce summit with its summit marker (called a trig point, which used to be used for measuring the height of the mountains and mapping) set on top of a large rock. Nice views here again. It can be windy. Bring an extra layer and jacket in your bag.
We will provide further information on what’s needed and joining instructions to those who sign up.
Email [email protected] to register. The cost is €45 pp, with all proceeds going to Michael’s Fan Club. Co-founded by ex-MBAAI board member Conor Horgan following the loss of the his 8 year old son to cancer, the charity brings joy to the lives of kids in treatment for cancer through sporting experiences.
